On this date, March 21st:

-1990 (23 years ago): Namibia (also known as the Republic Of Namibia in southern Africa), gained independence on this day.

-1970 (43 years ago): Walter Francis White (61) American Civil Rights Activist and leader of the NAACP, died in New York City, NY on this day; Roy Willkins succeeded him as NAACP executive, April 11 in the same year.

-1965 (48 years ago): The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. leads thousands of people on a 54 mile march from Selma to Montgomery, AL to call for voting rights for African-Americans on this day.

-1960 (53 years ago): It happened on the same day of the year of 1960, the first lunch counters were integrated in San Antonio, TX; secondly, the Sharpesville Massacre in apartheid South Africa in which white police killed 69 Blacks and 186 were wounded.

-1947 (66 years ago): On this day, James Baskett (1904-1948) was given a Special Academy Award for his part as Uncle Remus in Disney's "Song Of The South." He was the second American of African decent to recieve an Academy Award. Baskett was also the first American of African decent hired by Disney. Unfortunately Baskett was unable to attend the premiere in Atlanta, GA because he was unable to get accommodations.
