-1947 (66 years ago): William J. Jefferson, first congressman elected from Louisiana since Charles Edmund Nash left office in 1876, was born on this day.

-1933 (80 years ago): Musical Impresario, record producer, arranger, composer, and conductor Quincy Delight Jones, Jr. was born on this day in Chicago, IL.

-1917 (96 years ago): First training camp for "colored" officers is established by the U.S. Army in Des Moines, IA on this day.

-1838 (175 years ago): Blacks held a mass meeting in Philadelphia, PA  on this day to protest the action of the Pennsylvania Reform Convention of 1837 which denied them the right to vote.

-1794 (219 years ago): On this day, Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin which made cotton king and increased demand for slave labor.
