Even though, we don’t have snow and ice on the roads, there has been a number of fatal traffic accidents throughout the state and right here in Central Illinois.

State police are warning drivers to plan ahead now before they join a large number of motorists on the road these next few days.

According to week.com, Illinois State Trooper Ross Green says drivers should be vigilant when they get inside of their vehicles to travel or go out for the holiday.

He says so far the number of traffic deaths this year is about 1,054, comparable to numbers from last year.

“You have to understand that getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, getting in a vehicle is a dangerous situation. We put a lot of trust in other drivers out on the road. Do your part, leave yourself enough time to get to your destination, make sure you’re buckled up, completely eliminate distractions,” he said.

State law requires drivers to use hands free cell phone devices when behind the wheel. Trooper Green says still many drivers are not following that law. The state police safe driving campaign will continue through next Tuesday.
