If a number you don’t recognize calls, lets the phone ring once and hangs up, you have reason to be skeptical.
According to week.com, the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office said there is a phone scam now hitting Central Illinois. The caller will often have a local area code (309, 217 or 815) to make the recipient of the call more likely to call back.
This is the latest twist on an old phone scam that can cause consumers to rack up high fees.
The Federal Communications Commission said if you return the call, you might be connected to an international number that charges a large fee just for calling, and per-minute fees for remaining on the line.
The FCC also said that other area codes used by the scammers include: 268, 284, 473, 664, 649, 767, 809, 829, 876 and.other international area codes.
