Peoria Police are warning residents about a tax scam.
According to CINewsNow, authorities say a person is calling and telling people they are with the IRS or Treasury Department.
They then claim the person owes money to the IRS and needs to pay immediately or face punishment.
After threatening victims scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV.
If you believe you are a victim of a scammer, report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.
