WVEL CommunityScene: Origami Outfit Contest

Interested in "high-paper" fashion, creative origami, or an awesome game of "dress-up," come and try your hand at creating your own paper outfit! Participants will be given the chance to model their creations on a runway (or have a friend model). Top designers in each category win a prize! Call 309-863-3034 to register.

Design on a deadline:

Age divisions have a staggered start, but everyone must be finished folding and cutting by 4pm. Runway show begins at 4:15pm

Categories:

Adults (18+): four hours to work, beginning at 12pm
High school students (grades 9–12): three hours to work, beginning at 1pm
Middle school students (grades 5–8): two hours to work, beginning at 2pm
Elementary school students (up to grade 4) and small children with their caregivers: one hour to work, beginning at 3pm

At-home Challenge:

In addition to age divisions, there will be a division for garments made at home (there is no time limit, but the garment must be made of entirely of paper, held together with thread, staples, glues). Participants in this division should arrive at the museum by 3:30pm to sign in and prepare for the runway show.

Additional info:

All materials provided, including large rolls of craft paper in white, black, red; and smaller pieces of accent color paper
Participants may use staplers, tape, or glue (all provided)
Participants in the at home challenge may use their own materials or pick up a length of paper at the museum ahead of time
A break room with refreshments will be available for participants. 
Models must wear clothing under paper creations on the runway (paper must not be attached to clothing)
There will be special award for best creation in the true origami style from any division – participants in this division must make their garment out of a single piece of paper without cuts (a minimal amount of glue/staples/tape will be allowed)
Prizes will include VIP tickets to Robert Lang’s lecture on April 17, Museum passes, museum gift certificate, Folding Paper: The Infininte Possibilities of Origami exhibition catalog, and more
Winning runway garments will be featured on our Facebook page and on our website's Folding Paper exhibition "Try It" section
Cost per participant

Adults–Middle School Divisions: $18 members, $20 public
Elementary School-age and Small Children (with Caregivers): $8 members, $10 public 
At-home challenge: $8 members, $10 public
