1974- Grenada achieves independence from Great Britain

1967- Christopher Julius "Chris" Rock, III, comedian, author, recording artist, actor, and talk show,  was born in Andrews, SC on this day.

1946- Filibuster in U.S. Senate killed the Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC) bill

1945- Irwin Molison appointed to Customs Court

1926- "Negro History Week" originated by Carter G.Woodson is observed for the first time; in 1976 it became Black History Month.

1883- Jamest Hubert "Eubie" Blake, pianist, was born in Baltimore, MD.

1872- Alcorn A&M College (now Alcorn State University) opened.
