A Peoria civil rights leader received a special distinction Sunday.

According to cinewsnow.com, Pearly Bonds was honored at the NAACP, as the building was renamed in her honor.

Bonds was active during the civil rights period, working with other local leaders to help eliminate segregation in housing and employment.

Peoria NAACP President Donald Jackson said the now 90 year old Bonds, was set on creating equal opportunity for everyone in her community.

Jackson said, "When she has a goal in mind she works at it until she accomplishes the goal,  that's been her motto all her life and that's been the way she has worked all her life."

The building on MacArthur Highway will now read the NAACP Pearly M Bonds Community Center.
