MLK Happenings In Central Illinois:
Peoria, IL:
-The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon featuring keynote speaker Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is sold out, but tickets are still available for $20 at the door. Just pay at the door of Exhibit Hall C. Dyson will start speaking around 12:45pm until 1:30pm Guests attending the speaking portion only are encouraged to arrive at noon.
-A Freedom March honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will begin at 2pm at the Romeo B. Garrett Cultural Center at Bradley University's Campus. The March will continue to New Morning Star Missonary Baptist Church at 413 West John Gwynn Jr. Avenue.
Galesburg, IL:
-Knox College will present its annual Martin Luther King Day Convocation at 11am, Monday, January 20th, in Harbach Theatre, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, on the Knox campus in Galesburg. The convocation is free and open to the public.
Bloomington, IL:
-In honor of the steadfast activist and leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Action Research Center, Peace Fellows, and Unraveling Inequality liberal arts cluster will sponsor the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Teach-In. This year’s event, which will focus on health care and social justice, will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Monday, January 20th in the Center Court of the Hansen Student Center (300 E. Beecher Street, Illinois Wesleyan University). Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to attend and participate.
-The 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Gospel Festival will be held on Monday, January 20th at Illinois Wesleyan University. The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 3pm to 9pm in Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall (1210 Park Street).
Decatur, IL:
-Millikin University students will be holding a food drive to benefit Catholic Charities food pantry. Drop off an item at Sam's Club in Decatur from 9am-1pm
-The Annual MLK Freedom March will be held in Decatur at both Mueller and Hess Parks. They will begin at 12noon.
-Charleston, IL:
-The Zeta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host a candlelight vigil, march, and tribute. That event will be held on Eastern Illinois University's campus at 5:30pm in the evening.
Urbana, IL:
-MLK Youth Commemoration and Afternoon of Service,10:30am to 3pm at the Urbana Civic Center
(108 East Water Street). Join high school youth for a celebration of the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Includes performances, guided discussion, and afternoon on-site volunteer activities.
Champaign, IL:
-MLK Day of Service Events 1pm to 4pm at ARC, University of Illinois (201 East Peabody Drive); for University Students, Multiple service sites, volunteer with youth, outdoor cleanup and maintenance for seniors, neighborhood clean-up, meal packaging, hunger-related volunteering, and other service projects.
Quincy, IL:
–First Baptist Church, 739 North 8th Street, will host Quincy's celebration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the service is today at 10am.
