-1988 (25 years ago): On this day, figure skater Debi Thomas becomes the first African-American to win a medal (Bronze) at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

-1964 (49 years ago): Anna Julia Cooper, champion for the rights of African-American women, dies at the age of 105 on this day.

-1942 (71 years ago): Journalist Charlayne Hunter was born this day in Due West, SC.

-1902 (111 years ago): On this day Marian Anderson, who will become a world-renowned opera singer and the first African American soloist to perform at the White House in Washington, DC, is born in Philadelphia, PA.

-1872 (141 years ago): Charlotte Ray graduates from Howard Law School. She is the first African-American lawyer in the U.S.

-1869 (144 years ago): John W. Menard spoke in Congress in defense of his claim to a contested seat in Louisiana's Second Congressional District;  Menard was the first Black to make a speech in Congress on this day.
