In the most obvious publicity stunt ever, a tape of Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey was conveniently "leaked" to gossip website TMZ. The web and entertainment bloggers and TV shows have been all abuzz today about this argument between the two as Nicki is seen is hurling curse words at Mariah. The two are being paid an insane amount of money to be judges on the upcoming season of American Idol. Ratings for the once king of talent shows have been on a steady decline for the last several seasons. The rise of competitive shows such as The Voice, America's Got Talent and X Factor have contributed to lessening ratings. Executives at the Fox network are obviously not going to rest on the new crop of judges this season to boost the ratings, but are willing to sink to juvenile publicity stunt tactics. As a woman of color I am particularly disgusted by the stunt. There are plenty of trashy television shows which display African-American women in less than a stellar light, do we actually need another? If this is the kind of show you want to watch, look no further than The Real Housewive's of Atlanta, Basketball Wives, etc. I am tired of the continued stereotype of angry and argumentative black women. Why not have Keith Urban or Randy Jackson argue, if they insist on garnering attention in that manner? I am still curious as to why anyone thought Nicki Minaj worthy at this early stage of her career to even judge the talent of others. Mariah is an obvious choice having a record breaking career of number one hits, and LONGEVITY. She has earned the title "Diva" and I mean in the good definition of the word. A petty argument as the one in the released tape is so far beneath a woman of her stature that she should have walked away before willingly participating in such a farse. I hope the backlash that the show has received today will make all parties involved think about their careers and legacy as a whole before continuing down this pathetic path for viewership.
