Newsline: Baby Sleeping Tips

Health Official Experts are sharing tips for Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month to help keep babies safe.

In 2018, 143 infants under the age of one died in Illinois due to hazardous sleeping environments.

According to WGEM-TV, Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing & Health Sciences Associate Professor/ Registered Nurse Brandi Venvertloh said it is safest for babies to sleep alone on their backs on a firm mattress without pillows, toys, and blankets.

Venvertloth said babies may not have the muscle strength to turn themselves back over while sleeping.

She adds sleeping with your baby is dangerous because a person could roll over at suffocate the baby.

“I know for myself when I was new mom, I really didn’t have the questions until I got home and I was ready to put my baby down to bed, so sometimes it’s better for us as healthcare personnel are proactive and we talk about it with families,” Venvertloh added.

Additional information on infant sleeping tips from Safe Kids Worldwide:

  1. Dress baby in a wearable blanket, onesie or similar clothing for every sleep- A loose blanket could cover baby’s airway or make their body temperature too high.
  2. Share your room, not your bed- Place baby’s crib or bassinet in your bedroom instead of letting baby sleep in the same bed with you.
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to assemble your crib- Make sure to complete and submit the product registration card to learn about any recalls or safety updates
