Lyme disease is on the rise nationwide, especially now that it’s warmer out.

According to WGEM-TV, experts said the number of Lyme Disease cases has doubled over the last decade and will likely continue to rise in Illinois.

Symptoms include fatigue, headache, or a bullseye rash, but if not treated quickly, it could lead to worse problems.

“If it’s left untreated at later stages, it can lead to more serious things that can affect your joints, which leads to arthritis, your nervous system, or neurological symptoms or even your heart,” Director of Medical Entomology Laboratory at the Illinois Natural Survey Chris Stone said.

Experts said the best thing to do is preventative care like wearing long sleeves, using bug sprays and taking showers as soon as you come inside.

If you’ve been bitten by a tick, remove it as quickly as possible. Save the tick in a Ziplock bag and bring it in to your doctor to make sure it’s not a deer tick.
