Last week was “Mail Carrier Safety Week:” but that doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about the reasons behind it.

Dog bites happen more frequently during the summer months.

If your dog bites a mail carrier, you won’t receive any mail until you’re approved by a regional mail supervisor.

The police also will respond to investigate.

Quincy, IL Post Master Bill Reitz says there are a few common situations where dog bites are most common.

“They’re either outside with a kid that’s out for the summer and they’re out there like that, or, one of the biggest problems we have is when a mail carrier comes up to the [door] and has to have something signed for or knocks on the door, and someone comes to the door and when they open the door it slips past them,” States Reitz.

You’re encouraged to lock your dog up when you usually get your mail, and also make sure your child isn’t answering the door for your mail carrier.
