Peoria Sears not among 142 closing after bankruptcy filing.

The last Central Illinois Sears store still open will likely remain so through the end of the year.

The 125-year-old department store filed for bankruptcy on Monday after years of sluggish sales and financial struggles. As part of its bankruptcy filing, the chain announced the liquidation and closure of 142 Sears and Kmart stores across the country before the year’s end.

Among the stores closing is as follows:  Joliet, IL Sears, Norridge, Quincy, and Moline, IL Kmart stores, Business Insider & WEEK-TV reports.

The company announced the closure of its Eastland Mall anchor store in Bloomington, IL earlier this year, leaving Peoria’s Northwoods Mall outlet as the sole anchor store still open in the region.

It remains unclear what may be the ultimate fate of the venerable department store chain as it moves through the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process.
