The University of Illinois is restricting bags fans can carry into Memorial Stadium this football season.

According to WAND-TV, the school announced it will allow fans to carry in one large clear bag and a small clutch purse. The bags either need to be a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag, a clear drawstring bag that is at most 12-by-12 inches, or a clear bag tote up to 12-by-6-by-12 inches.

The U of I athletic department says it is joining the rest of the Big Ten Conference in implementing the policy for safety. The school said in a press release.

“Not only is the clear bag policy an important step towards enhancing public safety, it will also improve efficiency at our stadium entrances. We frequently review our policies against industry standards for stadium safety and clear bags are among the best practices endorsed by security experts.”

U of I football ticket holders received a voucher that is good for a free clear bag tote, which can be picked up at Gameday Spirit stores. Champaign locations on Green Street and South Neil Street, along with kiosks in Grange Grove and along the east side of the stadium, will accept the vouchers. The public can also buy clear bags through Gameday Spirit stores at www.gamedayspirit.com for $10.

Memorial Stadium also prohibits weapons, some electronic devices and other items. Click here to fightingillini.com/sports/2018/8/10/clear-bag-policy.aspx, for more information.
