Health experts and teachers recommend a sleep schedule to help students be more successful in the classroom.

Supervisor Suzanne Bogue with the Blessing Hospital Sleep Center in Quincy, IL, recommends school age children sleep around eight to nine hours each night. She says with more sleep students can go to school more focused and with a positive attitude.

Supervisor Bouge says,

“Usually just start increasing the bedtime by 15 minutes and making it shorter and shorter. Eventually until you get to that goal mark over the course of a week at minimum, usually two weeks to get back into a schedule.”

Denman Elementary second grade teacher Sandra Polak shared the effects she sees when students are not well rested.

Polak says,

“You can tell the kids are very engaged and very excited about learning do get enough sleep. The kids that are struggling a little bit, they just don’t have the energy.”

Suzanne Bogue also recommends turning off electronics including cell phones or tablets around an hour before bedtime, so the body can focus on falling asleep.
